Once we grow older it is highly important to monitor the foods and drinks we consume as unhealthy diet can lead to many serious health issues, including high cholesterol and heart diseases as the most common.
Our bodies require cholesterol in order to produce hormones, vitamin D, and substances for digesting food.
Some of the food that we consume adds cholesterol levels which can lead to health problems.
In case your cholesterol levels are high you have to be cautious about these foods and try to avoid them:
Macaroni and cheese – it is made with butter, milk, and cheese high in saturated fats and cholesterol.
French fries – they are high in cholesterol because they contain hydrogenated vegetable oils. Such oils make more stable and are less likely to spoil. It converts the oil into a solid, making it easier for transportation. The oils can endure repeated heating without breaking down and this makes them ideal for frying fast foods.
Red meat – beef, lamb, and pork contain more cholesterol and saturated fats than other meals which contributes to increased cholesterol levels and make the heart disease even worse.
Margarine – it has been once thought to be a healthy alternative to butter, but margarine only adds cholesterol. According to a research some margarine forms, especially the hard stick forms, are worse for the heart than butter because they contain great amounts of trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils.
Ice cream – this is not the best choice for snack as it is high in cholesterol. One scoop contains fat more than a hamburger and more cholesterol than 10 glazed doughnuts.
Shellfish – there are benefits of consuming shellfish, but people who have heart disease or high cholesterol need to avoid them because 3oz of lobster contain 61mg of cholesterol. This does not include dipping it in melted butter.
Fried chicken – this is a meal people often look to chew down, however, you might want to reconsider this option and switch if for a healthier one, because it can be packed with more cholesterol than a hamburger.
Cream cheese – it is amazing when you spread it over a bagel or bake it into a cake, however, cream cheese is a food that contains cholesterol. One ounce of it has 27mg of cholesterol.
Egg yolk – they have high cholesterol content. People who have cholesterol and heart disease are advised not to consume them, but it is completely ok for a healthy person to consume 4 egg yolks per a week as it will not contribute to increased cholesterol levels and heart disease.
Hamburgers – it is loaded up with lots of things like bacon, cheese, onions, and many more. You have to think again before you head to McDonald’s. One Big Mac contains 85mg of cholesterol, while Classic Double 175mg.
